Amelia's History

The Albuquerque Chapter thought a geocaching game would be fun to do during the Spring 2008 section meeting. After much brainstorming, they came up a game entitled "Where's Amelia?" with Amelia Bearhart as the object of the game. Thanks to Albuquerque Chapter members Greta Moore for finding such a precious "Amelia" and Barbara Fricke for making the leather helmet and satchel, complete with logbook! Those wanting to wander Albuquerque's Old Town with their handheld GPS in tow would look for clues and then solve the riddle of where to find Amelia. Bonnie & Tom Lewis and Mitch Whonic (working as a team) were the first to get all the clues and figure out the riddle. They found Amelia Bearhart now hidden in the Hospitality Suite amongst all the stuffed bears that had been there all along.

Once Amelia was found she began to start traveling. Bonnie & Tom took possession of Amelia and have taken her everywhere. The intent for Amelia is that she now becomes a traveling companion for South Central Section Ninety-Nines. We would like her to stay in the possession of South Central Section members, please. Obviously, we'd really like her to make all the Section meetings and International Conferences. She should be with plenty of 99s wherever possible.

Amelia spent March though September 2008 traveling extensively with Bonnie and Tom and the Brazos River 99s.

Since the San Antonio Chapter won the Travel Award at the Fall 2008 meeting in Amarillo, TX, Amelia has transferred to that Chapter.

At the Spring 2009 meeting at the Pecan Plantation in Granbury, TX, Houston Chapter won the Travel Award. Amelia will be moving to Houston soon after she completes the Air Race Classic, flying with Sherry Walker and Nancy Aldrich of the San Antonio Chapter.

When a SCS 99 takes Amelia somewhere, we would like you to take pictures and then send a write-up of Amelia's trip and photos to SCS Webmaster Linda Horn at webmaster@scs99s.org. This way we won't have to ask "Where's Amelia?"

Please send updates and/or corrections to the SCS Webmaster
